VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI - a new member of the VAR-SOM Pin2Pin System on Module family

Variscite is pleased to announce the launch of the VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI System on Module, powered by NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini processor. The VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI offers a low-power and cost-optimized solution with ultimate scalability options to suit a wide range of applications and cost requirements.

Less than a year ago, we introduced the DART-MX8M-MINI based on the same processor but in a different form factor, a platform that is already in full production. However, the VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI’s form factor is designed to fit the VAR-SOM Pin2Pin product family and to provide a more cost-effective option to customers with flexible requirements on their end-product size.

With up to 1.8GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 plus a 400MHz Cortex-M4 real-time processor, the VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI provides a variety of interfaces including certified single band 802.11 b/g/n or dual-band 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n, 4.2 Bluetooth/BLE, Gigabit Ethernet, dual USB2.0, CAN bus and LVDS. Additionally, the SoM supports a temperature range of -40 to 85°C, integrated HW engines supporting 1080p video encoding and decoding, HQ audio, 2D and 3D graphics, integrated resistive touch panel and a generous longevity commitment of 15-years.

The VAR-SOM-MX8M-MINI offers low-cost options compared to the DART-MX8M-MINI due to the use of DDR4 instead of LP-DDR4 memory and the availability of a single band WiFi option in addition to dual-band WiFi. Variscite also added the option for an integrated on-SoM CAN-bus bridge as opposed to a bridge on a carrier board provided in the DART-MX8M-MINI.

The SoM is pin-compatible with the VAR-SOM Pin2Pin product family, providing our customers with ultimate flexibility, extended lifetime, as well as reduced development time, cost, and risk. This impressive product family stretches across a wide range of performance levels including the i.MX6UL/6ULL/6ULZ, i.MX6, i.MX 8X up to the i.MX 8QuadMax.
